Turning niche expertise into inbound enquiries
Independent B2B Consultant
An independent B2B consultant with a decade of specialist experience, almost no public visibility, and a pipeline entirely dependent on referral.
Anonymised client engagement. No enquiry volumes, revenue figures, or follower counts are published.
Context
The work was strong and repeat clients were loyal. The problem was that nobody outside the existing network could tell what the practice actually specialised in.
A LinkedIn profile described the career rather than the offer, and posting happened in bursts whenever delivery slowed down.
Challenge
Positioning changed with every conversation. In one meeting the practice was about operations, in the next about change management, in the next about cost.
Because the offer was described differently each time, referrals were vague and prospects arrived unsure whether they had the right person.
There was no time for a content programme that assumed a marketing team.
Diagnosis
We reviewed two years of proposals, won and lost, and looked for the language clients used when they described the problem in their own words.
The winning proposals shared one pattern: they were bought at a specific moment, by a specific role, to resolve a specific recurring failure. The losses were the engagements sold on general capability.
The profile and content were describing capability. The buyers were searching for the moment.
Strategy
Define one defensible position anchored on that buying moment rather than a service category.
Build three content pillars directly from questions clients had already asked in discovery calls.
Set a publishing rhythm that survives a busy delivery week — sustainable frequency over ambitious frequency.
Execution
Rewrote the LinkedIn profile so the first three lines state who it is for and what decision it helps with.
Produced a messaging one-pager the consultant could use verbatim in calls, proposals, and introductions, ending the drift between descriptions.
Created a content system: three pillars, a repeatable set of post formats, and a backlog seeded with real client questions.
Agreed a cadence tied to delivery reality, with a small buffer of pre-written pieces for heavy weeks.
Outcome
A consistent public voice: the same position described the same way across the profile, proposals, and conversations.
A profile that a stranger can read in ten seconds and correctly summarise.
Enquiries that arrive already understanding the offer, which shortens the qualifying conversation considerably.
Independent experts are rarely under-qualified. They are under-described. The fastest visibility gain is usually not more content — it is deciding on one sentence and refusing to vary it.
